SIWA OASIS

Siwa is a desert daydream brimming with olive trees and palms in a slow-paced oasis life. This is the grandest and the most remote of Egypt's Western Desert oases, and is on the edge of the Great Sand Sea which offers the ultimate oasis experience. This is also where Alexander the Great came to consult the oracle of the gods and is the perfect place to cycle through huge palm groves, take a desert tour to hot and cold water springs and lakes, or try some sand boarding down the steep dunes.

Famous Salt Pool/Lakes

Don't worry if you can't swim - the unique thing with these salt pools/lakes is the inability to sink, even if you wanted to! It's all due to the high salt concentrations, almost 95 percent salt due to the neighboring salt mines! There are hundreds of salt pools/lakes spread throughout the Siwa Oasis region. Rarely visited, the lakes of Siwa are still unique, pristine and unspoiled.

Old City of Shali

Central Siwa in dominated by the beautiful organic shapes of the remains of a 13th century mud-brick fortress built from chunks of salt from the lake just outside of town, mixed with rock and then plastered with local clay. It's quite the labyrinth of buildings and is a spectacular sight to wander around.

The Oracle Temple

Also known as the temple of Alexander the great. It is believed that Alexander the Great came here seeking the answer from God Amun, and was declared son of Zeus (God Amun in ancient Egyptian religion) and that he has the power over the whole kingdom of Egypt.

Mountain of the Dead

(Jabal Al Mawta) This mountain is home to thousands of graves which are cut directly into the bedrock giving it the name 'Mountain of the Dead'.

Cleopatra's Pool

This is a popular bathing spot for locals and tourists. The crystal-clear water gurgles up into a large stone pool. Legend has it that the Egyptian queen herself swam here during her visit to Siwa. Absolutely refreshing after a hot summer day!

Salt Therapy, Olives, Figs

The therapeutic capabilities of the Siwa Salt Lakes are incredible. They are recognized for treating skin problems, sinus problems, psoriasis, rheumatism, digestive system diseases, joint inflammation etc. Siwa is also famous for its olive groves and palm gardens. Siwa has more than 300,000 palm trees where you can find delicious sweet figs, and 70,000 olive trees.
